Özel Türkbas

Recorded in Istanbul in the 1960s, the heyday of the Turkish nightclub scene, Alla-Turca is one of the most influential bellydance albums of the era, featuring dancer Özel Türkbas and a line-up of legendary Turkish and Turkish-Gypsy musicians. This reissue includes bonus tracks from a second classic Özel bellydance album, Kismet, featuring the great ney master Aka Gündüz Kutbay.

Hakim's Yaho is a The 1960s classic that first introduced Americans to authentic Turkish bellydance, and to some of the great Turkish nightclub musicians of the 20th century, including the legendary Turkish-Gypsy clarinet player Mustafa Kandirali– all under the guise of that swing-era staple, the art of domestic seduction. Produced by and featuring the famous Turkish dancer Özel Türkbas, first brought to America to dance by Italian movie director Franco Zeferelli, How to Make Your Husband a Sultan sold 150,000 copies in the US (and a million in Turkey), spawning the craze for bellydance and Turkish music that continues today.

Hakim

Hakim's Yaho is a 14-track, high-energy, rhythm-driven CD. He is an Egyptian artist who has made quite a name for himself in his native country. Each song lists the musicians and the instruments they play in that song. From accordion to kawala, oud to keyboard, there are traditional Middle Eastern as well as very modern pop sounds. These are pop songs (sha'abi), and they are very danceable. There's next to no space between the songs; great for parties, since one song pretty much flows into the next.

Hakim

Hakim's third Western outing, following hard in the footsteps of his live album, is definitely a mixed bag. The tracks rooted in his native Egyptian sha'bi, like "El Salam" and "El Kalam Da Kebir," sizzle, while "Ya' Maya" is a track that takes him to the next level, with its stunning fusion of sha'bi rhythms and Egyptian classical music under a lyrical tale of hidden homesickness. And "Ya Albi," co-produced by Machete and Narada Michael Walden, uses a near-reggae beat to bring together the voices of Hakim and merengue star Olga Tanon, with some thick bass and an excellent Spanish rap from Kemo of Delinquent Habits.

Oojami

Hailing from the Mediterranean town of Bodrum on the southern coast of Turkey, Necmi Cavli, the composer and “music weaver” of “Oojami,” has put together traditional sounds of Turkey and the Far East along with funked up electronic beats and grooves. It is full of surprises. Breakbeat is defined as music that doesn't follow the normal 4/4, four-on-the-floor tempo. Based on drum rhythms, with its origins going back to jazz, it lends itself well to all forms of world music.

On this CD, the traditional Turkish/Arabic dance rhythms are caught in interplay with tight electronic snares, with a dubbed-up bass adding to the fusion sound.

TARAB is pronounced with a quick t sound with the tongue behind the teeth, like te-rob rather than a tar-rob. The meaning of this word is close to "ecstasy". The place one gets to when you are lost in the sisha, music and dance! Pronounced incorrectly it means dirt, earth soil. But then again both ways hold meaning don't they.

Nuba and Sirocco

Music of North Africa and most specifically Tunisia. I am absolutely in love with this collection. Nuba was formed in 1997 by Moez MÕRabet to preform the music and dances of his homeland Tunisia. In 1999 Sirocco joined him and this recording was born. oud, violin, stand up bass, clarinet, saxophone, ney, guitar zukra, lots of percussion and vocals. Richly recorded , a jewel in anyone's music library.

Michael Beach

Hands of a Thousand Dances is a gift to all the dancers. Michael Beach has been playing for years. Michael Kersy backs him up a bit on base and Steven Scaggs on oud, but most of the album is Michael Beach on drums, zorna, keyboards, percussion and vocals. He wrote an especially tender theme song for the album about how his soul meets the dancer's soul through his hands on the skin of the drum. He had it translated into Pharsi. This is a really great album full of short little pieces belly dancers can mix around to create routines for haflas, recitals, parties, classroom work and dance concerts. This collection has an excellent recording and production quality. (My favorite of course is Raks Delilah)

This is one of the sweetest Christmas albums of all time. For these instrumentals, a wonderful cast of supporting musicians join the Brothers to create a rich and magical sound. You'll find most of your favorite carols set to earthy Middle Eastern drum rhythms, the melodies played by brother Ishmael's kanoon, Steve Skaggs on oud, Steven Flynn on ney and Michael Kersey on bass. There is a rousing rendition of "Joy to the World" on zornas that is my favorite. "Coventry Carol" on oud and an ethereal "Silent Night" on the haunting ney are two other stand-outs. This is a CD the entire family will enjoy!

This is the fifth in the series by Soto. This time he serves up a delicious banquet of East Indian flavored compositions. These works are turbulent dreamscapes, very cutting edge for today's world music scenes, as well as today's bellydancers.

I love this album by Salah Dawson Miller and Amel Tafsout. I use it all the time for Wedding Showers because it has a great traditional wedding song Mabruk Mabruk, sung in Nubian and English. My class loves it! A must for all dancers librarys.

Salalidin Orchestra

A sweet mix of North Aftrican spiced up with electric blues guitar, Sinatra, fiddle, trumpet, Nguyen, zoomer, lottery drums, voice and the sound of the sea that gives it that coastal breeziness. This is a really cool album.

Richard Hagopian, Omar Faruk Teklibek

This music brings us back to that New York nightclub feel of the 1950's. Favorite bellydance oldies. A well played and beautifully recorded CD.

Kairo By Night

This collection has a lovely Classical Egyptian sound. A mix of traditional and original compositions played impeccably by the 7 member orchestra, Kairo by Night. People are very happy with this selection. Instrumentation includes bass viol, flute, piccolo, violin, harmonium, synthesizer, saz, oud, dumbek, dhol and mixed percussion.

The lively 9/8 piece "Arababa Tass Koydum" is the featured song on on Delilah's instructional DVD "Gypsy Veil: A Primer in 9/8 Rhythm". A Classic Jack Flanders Adventure

This is an incredible fantasy radio drama that takes place in Morocco. Our hero is Jack Flanders in search of the Holy Masmuda. On his way, we meet all sorts of fabulous characters:
Mo Jo Sam, a Yudu Man who practices yoga and voodoo; Casbah Kelly runs a bar down on the bay of Tangiers; Sunny Skys, the California divorcee; Lilah O’upi, the belly dancing inferet; Countessa Dezazinia, the sorceress; Fatima Tasseem, the herbalist; little Frida, the wizard; and many more great folks. Myths, tribal lore, magic, history and a 100 Middle Eastern and tribal proverbs punctuate the scenes, and the music was all recorded in Morocco.
